Hardwood flooring is always in style

Hardwood flooring adds a traditional and sophisticated look to any home. Polished wood floors became commonplace in the nineteenth century. Many of these original floors can be seen in historic homes that still exist today. This durable floor covering adds structural integrity to a home. Carpet Barn is a hardwood retailer that carries a large selection of wood flooring, from distressed wide planks to modern blonde strips. We have a showroom in Spokane and Spokane Valley, Washington.

Unfinished solid wood

At one time, unfinished hardwood flooring was the norm. This floor covering is still chosen by discerning homeowners today. After boards are nailed to the subfloor, the floor is sanded, stained, and sealed on-site. It takes one week to complete the floor, and one week for the floor to acclimate to its surroundings. While the installation process is lengthy, it is the ideal flooring for homeowners who:

  • Desire a floor with a flush look. This well-sealed flooring is preferable for kitchens.
  • Choose a less common stain or wood that is not available in prefinished brands.
  • Are undertaking a large renovation project or new construction.

Prefinished solid wood

Prefinished hardwood is finished in the factory and needs no further treatment in the home. Since factory sealers are typically more powerful than those available to on-site installers, finish warranties are often longer. Floors have a beveled, rather than a flush, look. Numerous wood species, stains, and textures are available as well as finishes that range from matte to glossy. Prefinished wood flooring is installed by nailing it to a wood subfloor.

Engineered wood

Engineered wood is a multi-ply flooring that, unlike solid wood, is appropriate for moisture-prone spaces like bathrooms and basements. It is less likely to contract and expand with temperature and humidity fluctuations. The flooring is composed of a layered wood core and a top hardwood layer. Wood strips or planks are usually connected to form a floor that floats above the subfloor. The highest quality brands last a lifetime with proper maintenance and care.
